MBA Myth Busters with Travis Morgan, MBA Whisperer
Here are some highlights from the conversation.
On test scores:
“I actually do tell people that your test score is the most important part of your application—not because it will get you in, but because a bad score alone can keep you out. A low score can land you in the bottom 10th percentile of admits, which means you’ll need to bring something truly exceptional elsewhere in your application to overcome it. It’s not about being a genius—it’s about showing schools you’re academically ready for the challenge."
On getting waitlisted:
“Being waitlisted is actually a really positive sign. It means the school absolutely sees you as someone who could succeed in the program—they just don’t have enough seats at the moment. I always remind my clients: a waitlist is not a ‘no,’ and there’s a lot you can still do to turn it into a ‘yes.’ The number one reason that someone gets waitlisted is test scores. That’s number one, by far. So the number one thing that you can do to get off the waitlist is to increase your test score."
On school selection and fit:
"The rankings are a place to start, not a place to end. If you dig into employment reports and look at which schools are sending students into your target industries, you’ll find amazing programs that don’t always top the rankings but are deeply connected to specific sectors. Sometimes the best school for your goals isn’t the best-known school.”
On the Executive Assessment:
"In my opinion, the Executive Assessment is the most transparent of the three major tests. It gives the most accurate picture of a person’s real abilities—not just their test-taking skill. I’ve seen students take all three exams, and the EA score consistently matches what I’ve come to understand about them through tutoring.”
