What It Means to be Wait-Listed
Schools have a limited number of spaces in their MBA programs. They will admit those candidates they think are the best match for their programs first. Sometimes they have other candidates who could be successful in their programs but who, because of limited space, cannot initially be offered a place in the incoming class; these people may be put on a wait list. If a space becomes available later, someone from the wait list may receive an offer of admission.
What You Should Do First
If you are wait-listed, contact the school that wait-listed you to determine whether it would be helpful to submit additional information. Find out from the school:
- what your chances are for being added to the class this year
- how long the school will maintain the wait list
- what the process is for deciding who from the wait list will get a space
If You Are Not Selected from the Wait List
If you are not offered admission, there may be some positive steps you can take to improve your application for reconsideration next year. Consider ways you might address the following weaknesses:
A deficiency in the quantity and/or quality of your work experience: A year or two in a different job or with new responsibilities might help your application in the future.
- Lack of quantitative courses or poor academic performance: Taking or repeating an economics, calculus, or statistics course would demonstrate aptitude and motivation.
- A weak GMAT® score: Consider retaking the test after additional preparation. Most schools will consider your best score rather than your most recent score, so there is little downside risk. But do not expect a different score unless you study to improve your performance.
Other Things to Do If You Don’t Get an Offer
- With suggestions from admissions counselors, prepare a new list of schools where your credentials would be more competitive.
- Reevaluate alternatives to the MBA path. Do you really need an MBA to achieve your goals?
