Personal Issues

Going to graduate school is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, but you are not the only person potentially affected by your decision. The first thing you will need to decide before you make your decision to enroll is whether you are ready. Once you have decided you are ready, you will need to make sure your family is ready, too.

Talk with Your Family

Ensure that everyone supports your decision to pursue a degree and understands how the family’s lifestyle will change.

  • You will be very busy, with little free time.
  • You are likely to have less money to spend.
  • You will need to complete homework assignments, so you may be unavailable to your family even when you are home.

Find a School-Sponsored Spouse or Family Organization

Some schools offer these organizations, which are valuable in assisting students with housing and other issues. Many members have been through the transition already, so they can help newcomers get acclimated. In school, you will immediately develop a new network of friends. Your family needs a network, too.

Career Placement Staff May Help Your Spouse
Find a Job

If you are relocating and your spouse plans to continue working, placement advisors can offer suggestions on local search firms, temporary agencies, and other resources. Consider working on campus. Most schools have active temporary employment offices.

Look into Cost of Living and Housing

Get information from admissions staff on the cost of living if you are relocating to a new area. They can also tell you the best places to look for housing. You may want to live near other married students or students with children.

Look for Housing

Most business schools do not offer on-campus room and board. As soon as you make your decision, plan a trip to find a place to live. The admissions staff can recommend the best time to look for housing.
