What “Diversity” Means

You should think of diversity in its broadest sense. Most schools want to bring together students from different geographic locations, work experiences, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and life experiences. Despite the somewhat stereotypical image of the MBA in the media as someone who wears expensive suits, drives a fancy car, and works in an investment bank, schools want to create a diverse class.

Maximum diversity will enrich an MBA program and enhance the learning experience of all students. Be sure to highlight your individuality in your application. Think about the person who will read your application. He or she may also be reading thousands of other applications. What would make yours stand out? Be sure to write what you want to say, not what you think an admissions director wants to hear—the latter usually rings false to an experienced admissions professional.
