All 229 students of the post graduate management course, along with 7 faculty members visited the Yusuf Meherally Centre in the outskirts of Mumbai as part of the student sensitization process of S P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). The centre is known for its work in rural development and income generation from non-farming activities for rural families. The students got to see the various self-sustaining models and methodologies used. They also interacted with the villagers and management of the organization.

It is an annual event where differently abled children and related NGOs participate on our campus to showcase their skills and talents. Various stalls are provided to the women groups and micro-entreprenuers to raise money for their organisation ( this year the stalls generated sales aggregating INR 60000 approx from selling their products), and corporate sponsorship provide financial assistance to the NGOs.( SPJIMR raised INR 100,000 from NABARD and 400 gift sets from Colgate Palmive along with various donations on an individual level for the event)  Read More

The unique pedagogy of DOCC to follow creative methodology found Mr. Partho Bhowmick, an eminent photographer who encourages hundreds of people with visual impairments to click pictures. The event based on the theme “BELIEF” aimed to demonstrate how photographs helps visually impaired people to get empowered by providing them earning opportunities and facilitate their social inclusion.  DOCC designed the event with the vision to provide common platform to sighted and visually impaired people and reduce tolerance in the society.  Read More

Abhyudaya as “growing together for welfare and development of all” has its origin from one of the most profound aphoromisms - 'be a contributor in preference to being a consumer'. This one year program for PGDM participants at SPJIMR aims at bringing about holistic development of the under-privileged children dwelling in slums and mostly studying in Government Schools by using education as an enabler. The project is concerned about the contributions of prospective MBA students to an organization, an industry and society in general rather than focus on what they get from an organization or a society. Through this project, SPJIMR hopes MBA participants will experience the joy of giving to society and continue this process of contribution.

A 3-member PGDM first year student team worked for close to 585 hours with the Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG), developing a business plan for the women Self-help groups all over Ladakh, in a quest to augment their income through a sustainable venture in Pashmina. The market was surveyed, and the students’ findings revealed that there was an opportunity to create branded, hand-knit Pasohmina products, and thus the genesis of “LEDeG Pashmina” – a brand offering guaranteed 100% pure Pashmina products, hand-knit by the women of around 48 SHGs across Ladakh. The plan was piloted as well, and 2 stoles were produced, priced and placed in the market.

Two students of PGDM first year have spent 6 weeks with SAWERA, an NGO working in the areas of Reproductive Child Health & Prevention of HIV/AIDS among Female Sex Workers (FSW), by developing an Employee Management System (EMS) for increasing the effectiveness of the NGO's functioning, while focusing on the improvement of the visibility of NGO and its work. Students have also worked on suggesting the NGO in its way ahead with providing alternate livelihood options to FSWs and the local unemployed youth with better job skills.

5 students of first year PGDM were engaged with Mlinda Foundation for Environmental degradation avoidance of Sunderbans by transforming polluting diesel vans to solar charged battery operated vans, and mud-chulhas to improved efficient cook stoves. In the process they have also explored the income generating opportunities for the villagers involved in the process.

A 45-day project was undertaken by 3 PGDM students to help the initiative of ‘Udavum Karangal’ (an NGO operating in the state of Tamil Nadu, India) to enhance the health care facilities in the rural parts of Thiruvannamalai District. The project involves the conceptualization and real-time implementation of ‘Video Conferencing based Tele-diagnosis of Psychiatric Illness’ to touch the lives of patients beyond geographical barriers and the projects also involves a proposal & plan of action for a Mobile Health Clinic to cater to the health care needs of rural India.  Read More

As a part of the DOCC project a 5 member student team worked with Talikulam Vikas Trust, which works for socio-economic development of Talikulam village by performing value chain analysis and creating a model for improving the income generated by the women affinity groups under the trust. They used quantitative methods like regression analysis, time study and suggested operational improvements in the associated garment unit and developed a proposal for shifting the unit to a new apparel park.

2 students of first year PGDM worked for 6 weeks for creating communication vehicles for branding Hamara Foundation (HF), an NGO that has been working for better cause of street children, with over 500 children enrolled in the Mumbai region. Students also evaluated the replicability of the Street Children’s Bank (SCB) & developed project evaluation metrics & performance appraisal parameters for the staff of the NGO for better effective functioning of the NGO so as to help it cater to the wider audience.  Read More

A 6 week project where 6 first year PGDM students engage full time with Himachal Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (HPVHA), the local chapter of Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI) to gauge the success of the implementation of their “Smoke Free” Campaign by understanding COTPA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003) Section 5 & 7 and its implementation with respect to Surrogate Advertisements and Pack Warnings along with scoping its impact on consumers & structuring a framework to understand the Socioeconomic impact of tobacco usage on the bottom of the pyramid.

Under the Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC) programme at S P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), all 180 students of the Post Graduate Management course are required to complete a six week project with an NGO in a rural environment. After evaluation based on student contribution and impact, the top 3 projects and associated NGOs were honoured at the annual Cummins DOCC Social Impact Awards.
