Highlights from TeamMBA Month 2009

In April, 48 schools participated in the 2nd annual TeamMBA Month initiative to give back to society through service projects and charitable activities. Over 3,800 students gave their time, energy, and business savvy to countless communities and causes. 

Here is a recap of how individual schools supported the 2009 TeamMBA Month: 

In two separate events, American University students volunteered at the National Arboretum to assist the Washington Youth Garden with tending to their garden and other tasks around the Arboretum, and volunteered at Loaves and Fishes to prepare and serve a hot lunch to 200 homeless or low-income individuals at a soup kitchen in the Washington, DC area.

Students from Baruch College raised funds and participated in the Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancers

As part of the ongoing Prison Entrepreneurship Program at Baylor University, students continued to work with inmates to help them prepare business plans to become future entrepreneurs.

Boston University students engaged in various service projects around the Boston area.

Students at Brigham Young University held a bone marrow registration drive, adding 209 new donors to the registry.

Five students representing Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Portland State University, University of Minnesota, and Brandeis University worked together to develop a viable, sustainable and flexible business model for skill development of underprivileged segments of society.

Students at Canisius College participated in various service projects to serve multiple groups, including meal programs, food banks, shelters, agencies that work with refugees, senior citizens, and Habit for Humanity.

Case Western Reserve University students raised funds and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Students at Claremont Graduate University collaborated with KaBOOM! to build a playground in San Bernardino at the Rudy C. Hernandez Community Center, which offers educational and recreational activities for families in need.

Drexel University students participated in several beautification projects including a neighborhood clean-up and tree planting.

George Washington University students volunteered with Hands on DC to clean up and refurbish public schools in the Washington, DC area.

Students from Georgetown University ran in the annual 10-mile Cherry Blossom Race to raise money for various charities.

Georgia State University students coordinated across campuses to organize the “Cans from the Classroom” food drive activity to benefit the Atlanta Food Bank.

In cooperation with the Peaceful Playground Project, Hofstra University students planned a playground build in collaboration with faculty from the School of Education, Health and Human Services.

At Howard University, students sponsored and held the school’s annual Denim Day, an awareness event to bring attention to the issue of sexual assault. Students spent the day making announcements in classrooms and disseminating educational flyers, buttons, and stickers.

Lipscomb University students helped to prepare the ball fields and facilities for RBI Nashville, a non-profit org serving inner-city youth.

Students at Michigan State University raised funds for and participated in the Komen Race for the Cure charity walk/run to fight breast cancer.

Mississippi State University students participated in various charitable activities, including food drives, toy drives, hot dog sale to benefit the Palmer Home for children in need, highway trash pick-ups, and building houses with Habitat for Humanity.

Oklahoma State University students, faculty, staff, coaches, alumni, and prospective students came together for an annual memorial run to honor and celebrate the 10 people from OSU who perished in a plane crash in 2001. The event raises awareness about the Blue Moth program to help young people cope with loss during their college years.

Student at Portland State University raised funds for and participated in the Race for the Roses charity event benefitting the Albertina Kerr Centers, which provide services to children, adults, and families with emotional or mental health challenges and developmental disabilities. In addition, students helped to build houses for the homeless through Habitat for Humanity.

Rollins College sponsored a team of students to participate in the annual IOA 5K race, the largest 5K in the state, which benefits various charities serving the local community.

Students at Rutgers University engaged in various beautification and greening projects in the Newark area in support of Earth Day.

Seattle University students worked alongside high school students to clean up the high school grounds.

Southern Methodist University students conducted a job seminar at a church in a low income community that has been hit especially hard by the recent economic crisis. The seminar included a keynote speaker; breakout sessions for job interviewing skills, job searching, and resume/application building; and a Q&A session with local business owners.

As part of the university-wide annual service activity The Big Event, Texas A & M University students beautified two houses in the area performing tasks such as washing windows, painting (inside and out), clearing trees and brush, and yard work.

Students at Texas Christian University raised funds for a local elementary school with a chili-cook off.

Students at The Ohio State University organized and held the 6th Annual Fisher 5K Walk/Run fundraising event to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus.

University of Alabama students performed various community service activities during the school’s Manderson MBA Week.

University of Arizona faculty and students came together to hold an auction and canned food drive for a local non-profit organization. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction go to the beneficiary.

University of Arkansas students raised funds for and walked in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's MS Walk.

Students at the University of Cincinnati raised funds and participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

In a collaborative effort with Project Homeless Connect and local organizations, the University of Denver helped to provide services for the homeless in Denver. The types of services offered included medical, substance abuse resources, legal counseling, employment counseling, and job placement.

Students at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa raised awareness and funds, and collected canned goods for the Hawai’i Food Bank’s largest fundraising event.

University of Maryland students planned a scavenger hunt for charity.

Students at the University of Missouri, Columbia engaged in several activities to give back. Projects included raising funds and participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life; picking up trash along a mile stretch of highway; and cooking dinner for guests of the Ronald McDonald House.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill students held a golf tournament to raise money to fund a house build with Habitat for Humanity. During the build, students organized and managed over 2,000 hours of labor from faculty, staff, other students, and alumni. 

Students at the University of Notre Dame worked to clean up a river in the South Bend community.

At the University of Oklahoma, students held their first annual "Suit Up" event to make available donated, gently used professional clothing to university students at affordable prices. All proceeds from the event were donated to the United Way.

University of Richmond students collected donations to benefit Comfort Zone Camp, a camp for children who have recently lost a parent or sibling.

Students from the University of South Carolina raised funds for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

University of Tampa students held a charity drive to collect school supplies for underprivileged children in the Tampa Bay area.

University of Virginia students partnered with local contractors to significantly renovate homes for 10 to 15 elderly, disabled and low-income residents in the Charlottesville area. Students raised over $50,000 during the year to cover the costs of the renovations.

Students from Vanderbilt University helped to build houses for the homeless with Habitat for Humanity.

Virginia Tech students raised funds for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Additionally, students helped to build houses for the homes with Habitat for Humanity.

Students at Washington State University raised funds for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

West Virginia University students organized and held a fundraising dinner for 250 people to raise money for the West Virginia Children's Hospital.
