I have a doubt in my mind which I wanted to clear.

Since ,the GMAT format will change a bit from the next year(2012),will the Business schools still be accepting the GMAT score (say ,which one got in august 2011)from next year onwards or will they be going with a decision to accept scores that are obtained through the new GMAT format .

I would like to leave a comment here...I was expected to date a test on a certain date and I left really early (around 1:30 hours before my exam time), however, there was a huge accident on the way and I could just not move at all. Getting to the testing center, I was late and I had not choice but to reschedule the test. When I called the center, they told me I had to pay full amount again even after explaining the situation...First of all, I had to wait on the line for 30-40 min and the person on the phone didn't know English (call center in India) so I had no choice but to give up. Keep it up with the great customer service.

I doubt so. Because GMAT is good for 5 years so test taken in 2010 is good till 2015 no matter how many new formats, new types of reasonings are introduced in this period between 2010 and 2015.

So I will be applying to business schools using my new passport, but my GMAT score report contains my married name passport details and name. A statement and two questions:

Statement: People that score low on a test and complain about or question the validity are more likely not to be believed in their argumentation than people that score high and question the the validity of the outcome, whatever arguments they use.

The following shows that I probably belong to the first mentioned group. As a preparation I used the GMATPrep software and after reading all instructions and examples I practices one complete test. This made me feel confident because my scores were 80% on the verbal part (and 87% on the quantitative part). However, during the official test I scored only 35% on the the verbal part (and again 87% on the quantitative part.

Of course I tried seriously both times. And I was not nervous nor did I run out of time. My disappointment about the huge difference makes me wonder: How big is the chance that the scores of one person lay so far apart when doing the test twice within a week? And secondly, is there a chance that being extremely week in only one type of question (in my case correcting written English) can have an unrealistic big effect on the scoring? (I mean, it seemed as if this type of verbal question was used far more often in the real test than in the practice software.)

Can we leave a question unanswered and move on to the next one? If we do that, do we get any penalty or no? Also what if we guessed a few questions and they are wrong, do we get penalized for it? I heard that you have to answer every question in gmat, cuz you can't move on to the next question unless you answer previous one? Please clarify this ASAP im taking gmat in April

Im very confuse about the guessing option in GMAT. Can we leave a question unanswered and move on to the next one or do we have to answer every question in order to move on to the next question? Also if we leave a question unanswered, do we get penalized for that? What if we guessed and its wrong, do we get penalty for that as well? Some people told me you canont skip a question until you pick an answer for it. Please clarify this..

Thank you for thoroughly answering my question in a previous blog. I have few more questions regarding the current entry:

1) Is the first question of random difficulty (meaning it could range anywhere from easy to difficult) or is it always of a medium difficulty level. The evidence I have from the GRE CAT is that the first question is random.

2) There are about nine experimental questions on the Quantitative which do not count towards one's score, what if someone spends a disproportionate amount of effort on these questions but is not rewarded in their final score for the effort? How do you eliminate the impact of such a scenario?

3) Why does the GMAT test writers not disclose the difficulty level of questions, similar to GRE, which tells the percent of students that answered a specific question correctly?

From the little I've learned navigating the site:

On the Home page, click on THE GMAT link.

On the left side, click on SCHEDULE A GMAT APPOINTMENT.

On the left side, click on FIND A TEST CENTER

Fill in the required information in the form that pops up and you can get between five and twenty test centers close to you.

Click on as many as you require and hit NEXT.

On the next paage, each center will provide a pop up calender that lets you know the dates available for testing.

This is invaluable when you have an idea of the time you will be ready for testing. I'm new to GMAT and I'm told to allow myself three - six months to prepare. So I put in my zip code and chose June 2010 as my test month. Available test dates in each center were then displayed.

I WAS SENT HOME on the day of my test because the ORDER of my two firstnames were not in the correct order. I had TO REPAY 250 dollars to take the exam again. The call centre did change the name order when i called...

I think the real problem with the GMAT is finishing the questions in the given time and this of cours requires practicing, 2 tests to prepare and get familier with the exam time frame are too little , plz consider making at least 5 tests available even with extra fees.

I have a query about the AWA component. When performing the exam, I am under the impression that USA spelling will be required - e.g. specialization (noting the use of "z" as opposed to "s", as in the British system). Is this correct? Are there penalties for misspelling such words?

That makes sense & I agree. I mean where I plan to do my MBA is a place where my specific programme (HR) is no longer offered, but it doesn't mean I no longer wish to obtain my MBA. It's always been my dream to obtain it, and as for HR, I already have a diploma from the programme not to mention my CHRP certification from HRPAO so all I need now is my MBA and my academic life is complete. :) So thanks, b/c I was wondering what the difference was b/w the GRE & GMAT. 5 yrs ago when I first graduated all I heard about was the GRE, and now 5 yrs later after being in the workforce and leaving F/T work to go back as a MBA Student, all I hear is GMAT this & GMAT that! :P So I guess you answered all my questions in your letter.

However I would have preferred to see a level of difficulty attached next to each question so the candidate can get familiar with the type of questions he/she may encounter on the date of the examination. Thank you for your excellent question. Because the GMAT is an adaptive test, people see different sets of questions. Scores are not based on the number correct. Rather, scoring is based on the difficulty of all the questions that a person has seen, whether the person got each of those question right or wrong, and the number of questions he or she answered. The scaled scores (0 - 60 for the Quantitative and Verbal sections and 200-800 for the Total score) are transformations from your performance on the Quantitative and Verbal Sections. These transformations are designed so that the scores represent the same ability level over time. A 550 in 2009, for example, represents the same ability as a 550 did in 1997. Because of constantly increasing ability of GMAT test takers over time, today’s mean is higher than in past years and percentiles that correspond to each score has changed.

The best book to start with for studying for the GMAT exam is The Official Guide for GMAT Review. It is the only book on the market that uses questions from past GMAT exams, so you know the questions are authentic. There is a comprehensive diagnostic test at the beginning of the book that will give you guidance on your strengths and weaknesses. From there, you can begin your studying with the topics that are most difficult. Additional practice on Quantitative questions can be found in The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative review, which has 300 questions that are not included in the main edition.

If the quantitative section is the area you are most concerned with, a GREAT place to start is GMAT Focus. GMAT Focus is a quantitative-only diagnostic tool that assesses your answers to 24 quantitative questions and breaks down your weaknesses not only by section (problem solving versus data sufficiency) but also by question type – word problem versus straight math problem, algebra versus arithmetic. It will also analyze how long you are spending on questions so you can work on your timing, and there is also an option to track the questions you are guessing on to see if you are guessing accurately. GMAT Focus is computer adaptive, so it also gives you an estimated score range and you can take up to 4 assessments without seeing repeat questions.

The diagnostic test in the Official Guide for GMAT Review will help you get a feel for where your scores range in each of the sections of the GMAT exam, and the answer explanations will give you feedback on what you got wrong and why.

Sentence correction, of all the sections, focuses the most on English grammar rules. Chapter 9, the Sentence Correction chapter, has a 4-page section on basic English grammar rules, that will give you guidance, but if you are really getting stuck, it might help you if you found a local tutor for more difficult concepts. To get even more practice with Sentence Correction problems, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review is completely dedicated to the verbal component of the exam and includes 113 additional sentence correction questions that are not in The Official Guide for GMAT Review.

Finally, using the free GMATPrep software will help you guage your progress. You can use the 2 free tests as a way to see how your studying is helping you reach your goal.

In this context, omit does refer to leaving questions unanswered at the end. To clarify, consider the scenario you describe. A person who is low on the quantitative scale who is time pressured may already be likely to get the last five questions wrong. But if that person takes the time to carefully consider the question she is on (rather than rapidly guessing) and gets the question correct, then that boost in score from the correct response may counteract some of the penalty for leaving the remaining questions unanswered. Let us assume the opposite, the same person randomly guesses the last five questions and randomly gets them all wrong. Because of the responses, the program continues to give the examinee easier questions, and because they are wrong, assumes the ability to be lower than what the examinee should have gotten. The study examined differences between ‘guess’ score and ‘omit (leave blank)’ score, without looking specifically at the size of the penalty for not finishing. The implication is that in some cases, the penalty for guessing incorrectly may exceed the penalty for not finishing. (Notice that the difference is small in the scenario you describe, and you might expect that either guessing or not finishing would result in very similar scores most of the time.) In all cases, the best strategy is paying careful attention to time, so there is no need to worry about whether to rapidly guess or not finish.

Could you clarify the omit option on the GMAT Computer adaptive test? My understanding is that there is a severe penalty for leaving questions unanswered at the end, meaning that if the time runs out and the student is say on question number 34 out of 37. The Official Guide says this explicitly. Are you suggesting that a student who is say in the 20th percentile range on the Quantitative is better off leaving the last five questions unanswered/omitted versus guessing on the last five questions and say getting them all wrong? I am just not sure what omitting questions in this context means. Thanks.

I bought your new second edition set of books (Verbal, Quantitative & Review) and according to the section - How are scores are calculated? you claim that scores are determined by a complex mathematical procedure.

I am trying to understand how this procedure works (high level) and how the scores are calculated on each section (excl. analytical writing) by the CAT application, assuming all or some questions are answered either correctly or incorrectly.

For instance, given that the verbal section has only 41 questions, how does it translate into a "scaled" score of 500, or 700, or 800 say?

Research has shown that the most effective type of test preparation is that which closely mimics the actual test experience. For instance, this can be accomplished by taking full-length timed practice tests. The more comfortable you are with what to expect, the better you are likely to do. Practice such as this can certainly be done on your own without the need for a test prep class.

GMAT scores are only one part of the selection process for admission to programs around the world. Because each program will differ in its requirements, I suggest you contact the programs you are interested in directly to get a sense of their average GMAT scores and the other requirements for its matriculants.

hello i'm from greece and i would like some GMAT advice. I actually want to konw if it is possible to get a high score by self study. Without attending any classes....I know tha i have to try hard for this but if i decide so is it a chance to get a high score?

Moses, you can access our free downloadable GMATPrepTM software if you simply register on mba.com. You do not need to register for a test date at this time, simply setting up your account on mba.com is sufficient to access this software.

Sasidhar, this is correct. You do need to use the authentication code that is included on your unofficial score report to view your Official Score Report. If you have misplaced your unofficial score report, you can contact Pearson VUE Customer Service to retrieve this code. Once your scores are reportable, you will receive an email with a link to access your official score report.

I am currently preparing for the GMAT.However, i do not have enough preparation material because i have not yet registered for the test.I will soon be changing my address and therefore, inorder to avoid any problems, i prefer to move to my new address before registering.

I want to change career all together, and I am trying to narrow down an area of focus. It would be nice to have an internship in 10 different industries, but that is obviously not feasible. Does anyone have a good resource for exploring different areas of study?

I remember seeing an article on the net/newspaper (sorry i don't remember the date and source), which said that the difficulty level of the questions in GMAT will be increased or probably some new type of questions are going to get added. Is this true?

I have heard that the first few questions in GMAT are very crucial in determining your score. Is that correct, since I have read at the GMAT website that the score depends on # of questions correctly answered(assume all attempted), and the weightage those questions carry. I am slightly confused about the strategy that I need to adopt.

Strategy#1.

Be slow and steady to get correctly answer the initial questions. This may result in scarcity of time towards the end.

Strategy#2.

Answer at a steady pace. This does not aim at getting the intial questions right.

Anyone has some reasonable comment?

Thank you for your question. The Analysis of an Issue essay requires you to express your views on a particular issue or subject. You are encouraged to provide relevant reasons and examples, that have been drawn from your own experience or reading, to support or develop your position. On the other hand the Analysis of an Argument requires the test taker to critique an argument (either supporting or opposing it). While responding, it is suggested that you question the assumptions that support the argument and discuss what examples or evidence might weaken or strengthen any conclusions drawn.
