One-Year Full-Time MBA Programs

Unlike two-year programs, one-year full-time programs usually have strict prerequisites for work background or academic training.

Typically, these program run 11 to 16 months, with less time in core classes or limited opportunities in specialization. Students do not work full-time; school is considered the first priority. Relocation may be required.

Advantages

One-year programs offer advantages particularly for career enhancers—those who wish to continue in the same job function or industry but at a higher level:

  • A very specialized program can make full use of your current career or industry specialty, saving you time in completing an MBA.
  • You may be able to customize your coursework through electives and concentrations, if core curriculum requirements are reduced to decrease the program’s duration.
  • The program’s environment encourages learning far beyond classroom instruction.
  • The spirit of competition and program intensity tend to be high.
  • Full-time collaboration among fellow students helps develop a cohesive network of MBA colleagues in your chosen field.
  • A program’s immersive learning experience includes career services (such as campus interviews), social and professional clubs (focusing on specific industries and professional preferences), executive speakers' series, career counseling, and other campus life services.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Scholarship money may be available (inquire at specific schools).
  • Loans are available for eligible full-time students

Limitations

  • Internship opportunities are limited because there are no extended breaks between semesters, which could potentially hurt career switchers.
  • Some employers who require an MBA for career advancement may not view a one-year program favorably. Ask in advance if your post-MBA employer will be supportive of this type of program.
