A traditional MBA degree offers a comprehensive general management background, but it doesn't provide extensive training in a specific field like accounting, finance, or marketing.
Some fields may be nearly impossible to enter without specialized training. Research your chosen profession to determine whether a specialized master's program may be an option for you before you pursue an MBA degree. Most do not require work experience and are designed for students planning to matriculate directly from their undergraduate (or first) degree.
Examples of specialized master's programs include:
- Master of Science in Finance
- Master of Science in Marketing
- Master of Science in Industrial Administration
- Master of Healthcare/Hospital Administration
- Master of Public Accountancy (If you are interested in becoming a Certified Public Accountant, you can choose this option or an MBA with an accountancy concentration.)
You may also consider, particularly in Europe, a Master of Science in Management degree. This one- to three-year program offers a general management background, but does not require work experience.
